The Glowlight Tetra is a fish native to South America, that reaches a length of 4cm (1.6 inches) and belongs to the Hemigrammus Erythrozonus genus. it likes a soft water with a temperature between 24 and 28 degrees Celsius (between 75 and 83F). It eats dried food, plant matter, small crustaceans and worms.
A lot of people had this fish in their aquariums since 1940. It has a silver color and a stripe that is of a bright red/orange, from the tail to the nose.
The species is quite peaceful and needs to stay with other fish of the same type. Don’t put bigger and more aggressive fish in the same aquarium with them. You can however put other type of tetra fish inside, like the Cardinal Tetra, Rummy-Nosed Tetra or the Neon Tetra. The best number of tetras to keep together would be between 5 and 8.
Make sure you get as many plants as needed inside the aquarium, so that the fish have plenty of places to hide, but it should also have enough open water inside.
If you’re a beginner aquarist, the Glowlight Tetra is a good fish to own. Their life varies between two and four years when kept in a tank.
You can tell which one is the male by the fact that it’s more slender, while the female has a body that’s more rounded. Breeding in captivity is harder to do, but it happens sometimes. If it does, both the female and the male will stay upside down and the eggs will be laid from this position. The eggs will go to the bottom after that. You should take the adults out of the aquarium next, because they will eat the young and the eggs.
